The short answer
Choose a sit-down meal for a formal wedding or dinner where speeches and timings matter. Choose a buffet for a relaxed party, a mixed crowd or a tighter budget. If you want something in between, family-style sharing gives you table service with buffet-style generosity.
At a glance
| Buffet | Sit-down meal | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per head | Lower | Higher |
| Atmosphere | Relaxed, people mingle | Formal, everyone seated |
| Timings | Flexible | Fixed courses, easy to plan speeches |
| Staff needed | Fewer | More serving staff |
| Choice for guests | Guests pick what they like | Pre-ordered or set menu |
| Dietary needs | Clear labels, separate area | Plated to each guest |
Cost
A buffet usually costs less per head because it needs fewer serving staff. Our Hot and Cold Table starts at From £28.00 per person plus VAT. A plated wedding breakfast starts at From £72.00 per adult incl. VAT, and that includes chefs, uniformed serving staff and a catering lead.
Atmosphere
A buffet keeps a party moving: guests get up, chat and go back for more. A sit-down meal brings everyone together at the same time, which is why it suits weddings with speeches and toasts.
Timings
Plated courses run to a schedule, so your venue, photographer and speakers know exactly when things happen. A buffet is more flexible, but people eat at different times.
The middle option
Family-style sharing brings big platters to each table. Guests stay seated and pass the dishes, and it feels generous and relaxed. It's £45.00 per person plus VAT, from 50 guests.
